Loan Deferment

All Lenders:

  • are required to utilize the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) to determine whether a student or parent is eligible for loan deferment or falls into repayment status for all student and parent loans.

  • receive enrollment data through the NSLDS; therefore, the WSU Office of the Registrar does not certify loan deferment forms (see statement below).

Section 4: Authorized Official's Certification

Note: As an alternative to completing this section, you may attach separate documentation from an authorized official that includes all of the information requested below or have your school report your enrollment to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) at nsldsfap.ed.gov

  • During Academic Year (Fall/Spring terms): Enrollment information is reported to the NSLDS through the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) MONTHLY.

  • Between Academic Terms: Advanced registration enrollment information is reported every Friday and is available to lenders the following Tuesday.

Student:

  • Direct Loan

  • FFEL Program

  • Perkins

If you’re enrolled in an eligible college or career school at least half-time, in most cases your loan will be placed into a deferment automatically.

The repayment period for students begins once you drop below half-time enrollment status (you graduated or left school). You may seek student loan deferment under certain circumstances. More information here: Student Loan Deferment | Federal Student Aid

Parents and/or stepparents:

  • Parent PLUS Loans

Parents must repay each loan received in monthly installments during a repayment period that begins on the day of the final disbursement of that loan.

  • Parents can request a deferment while the student is enrolled at least half-time, and for an additional six months after the student graduates or drops below half-time enrollment status.
